Staying up to Date:

Each year we continue to update our readers with news and photographs through our website here, and our Facebook page, which is our company name, Montana Whitetails. Keep checking in for the latest pictures and news from our elk hunting properties as we move closer to hunting season here in Montana. Spring is a time we walk all the properties and set new stands, check existing stands or ground blinds, look for new travel patterns and make adjustments for the coming season. Plus, we will try to update which dates are available for the upcoming season along with other information that may be of interest to you on our news page. For all the latest updates and photos, follow us through this website or on our Facebook page through the link on our home page of this site.

Limited Hunters:

We take up to 6 elk hunters per week, but can accommodate more if there are group bookings. Most weeks we have 2 - 4 elk hunters, however, our lodge(s) will hold 10 hunters that comprise of elk, whitetail deer, mule deer, and antelope hunters at the same time due to over lapping seasons. With this limited number of elk hunters on the vast area of several key elk hunting private properties, we can offer a quality, successful hunting trip to each elk hunter. We have the flexibility to move you to different elk hunting areas without disturbing other hunters.

What to Expect:

Your trip begins when you arrive in Bozeman, at the Yellowstone International Airport, (BZN). We'll pick you up so please send us your flight itinerary when you make your travel plans. The first afternoon, (Saturday), you'll settle in to your lodging accommodations and shoot your bow or rifle. Then set down for a home cooked meal while telling hunting stories and going over plans for the following days hunt. Your hunt begins Sunday morning and you'll hunt through Friday evening, 6 full days of hunting. You'll be in constant contact with your guide and we'll make sure to accommodate everyone's needs to make their trip a enjoyable, lifetime memory. We have several lodges and will schedule you in the one that most suits your booked hunting trip. You'll depart Bozeman on the following Saturday after your arrival. Meals (breakfast, lunch, & dinner), airport shuttle to camp from Bozeman, and lodging are all included in your hunting trip. Fantastic wild trout fishing in some blue ribbon waters is included and free of charge! You'll get a fishing license with your elk, or big game combination tags.

Success Rates:

Our harvest success rate with archery elk hunters average about 45% with several missed opportunities each season. Bow hunting elk can be a challenging affair for even the most seasoned bow hunters. Sometimes the elk just don't play the game by the rules. However, our rifle elk hunters fair a little better averaging around 70% success on bull elk during the firearm season here in Montana.

Your Hunt:

Your elk hunt begins on Sunday morning as you and your guide head out to the ranch we selected to start your hunt. A typical day begins with showing up pre dawn and either hiking into position or waiting for day break to glass for elk from a vantage point. A game plan is always in place before the days hunt begins but can change in an instant due to adjustments to get clients onto elk. Depending on what the elk are doing, we'll go from calling them in, to setting up for a ambush, or spot and stalk all in the same day according to what works best for that particular days situation. You could be out hunting all day, or just the mornings and afternoons depending on your expectations and goals to make your trip a enjoyable experience for you. Combination hunters have the luxury to break up a elk hunt by setting on stand for trophy whitetail deer on one of our private river bottom properties. Bow hunting only areas provide some incredible early season bow hunts for archery whitetails to enjoy during your trophy bull elk hunt. Antelope is also a really fun combo hunt to add to your guided Montana elk hunting trip. We are here to make your Montana hunting adventure a lifetime memory and will work hard to accommodate all your needs. If you need anything, just ask!

Our Private Ranches:

We lease some of the best elk habitat in SW Montana. If your looking for a full blown bow hunting adventure for bugling bull elk in a cabin smack in the heart of the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Montana during the peak of the rut, we have it. If your looking for a relaxing low elevation, spot and stalk or tree stand and ground blind elk hunt, we have that too. Archery or rifle, we have quality private land hunting loaded with resident elk, all from the comforts of a lodge we can return you to after each days hunt. Our lands consist of mountain side dark timber and clear cuts in the foothills, to the rolling valley river bottom's with irrigated alfalfa, wheat, oats, and barely fields for the perfect habitat to hold lots of Montana elk and other big game species. Whitetail deer, antelope, mule deer, moose, & black bear are also abundant on our private ranches and makes for awesome combination hunting opportunities during your trip.

Elk Hunting Gun & Gear Recommendations:

Bullet Information ~ More important than the caliber of rifle you use, is the type of bullet you'll be shooting from that rifle. I've had hunters drill elk with perfect shot placement from calibers as large as .700 Win Mags and had them walk off as if they missed and fall over 30 seconds later. And I had one client shooting a .243 with a DRT bullet drop both his bull elk and cow elk immerdiately where they stood.

Check out www.drtammo.com for more information on their ammunition. Bullet type is paramont while elk hunting so make sure to research your caliber and make educated choices on whch bullet you'll be bringing with you to Montana for your elk hunt. make sure you practice with that round at a shooting range and know the ballistics of that bullet at ranges out to 400-500 yards. More information can be found in our elk hunting guns and gear articles under the news and more menu link on our website.
